Purpose: Strategies and Actions for Independent Living (SAIL) is a multi-factorial fall prevention program for clients receiving home support services.

Method: A qualitative research study explored the experience of SAIL from the perspective of participants in a pilot program on Vancouver Island. Ten community health workers (CHWs), three home health professionals and two clients participated in semi-structured individual interviews or focus groups that were recorded and transcribed.

Findings: Inductive data analysis generated six themes and a description of the client experience of the SAIL program.

Conclusion: The themes reinforced the existing research on the SAIL program and led to recommendations for further research into the implications of SAIL for CHW education, documentation and communication skills, and into the potential benefits of a story-making approach to engage clients in fall prevention strategies.
